balloonsFamily Fun Night Helpers Needed
We need your help to pull off another amazing Family Fun Night. The date is set for May 7th from 6-8:30.
We still need volunteers to work on raffle baskets for Mr. Bonar, Mr. Crosswhite, Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Mendelssohn.
There is also a need for a few more parents to help with collecting business donations, ticket sales and food sales.
If you are interested or have any question, please contact April at apriluffens@thurstonpta.com
Family Fun Night Booth Rental
This year we are going to try something a little different. We are going to offer booth rentals to small business owners such as Pampered Chef, Avon etc. to set up a table at Family Fun Night. The cost will be $25 per table or free to our $100 PTA business sponsors.
We will only allow one vendor per business to avoid duplicate tables. This will be first come first served. So if you are interested, please contact April Uffens at AprilUffens@ThurstonPTA.com for more information.
Family Fun Night Business Donations
We are looking for donations for raffle baskets as well as BINGO prizes. If you work for a company or own a company that would like to make a cash or item donation, please contact April at apriluffens@thurstonpta.com
We will be recognizing every business donor on the baskets and in the newsletter that is seen by all TES families, staff & teachers. Great advertising for a great cause!

Thurston Elementary PTA Presents:

CPR Certification

Tuesday, February 16 or Tuesday, February 23rd

6:30-8:30 - TES Library

Teri Baker - Certified Trainer

$35 per person

This course is specifically designed to teach infant, child and adult CPR.

You will receive an AHA CPR card effective for two years

Teri Baker has been certified in CPR since the early 1970's, which gives her a unique historical perspective of this life-saving skill. She has been an American Heart Association BLS instructor for over ten years, and has years of experience in pre-hospital emergency care volunteering on two fire and rescue departments as an EMT-I.

Her personal goal for teaching
CPR is that each of her students understands the "why" of CPR. In order for students to fully grasp the power of CPR it is vital they should know the following;

  • Why compressions are so important,
  • Why ventilations aren't,
  • Why time is of an essence,
  • Why hesitation is deadly.

Because of decades of being both a student and teacher of CPR Teri is able to dispel myths and urban legends associated with CPR. Her goal is to make each student confident in their CPR knowledge and competent in their ability to perform this life-saving skill set.

You may visit Teri Baker's website for more information at http://www.lanecountycpr.com

Limit to 10 parents per class...so register now!

This same class usually averages $45

Albertsons LogoSafeway LogoAlbertsons Card Program - DISCONTINUED

We have been informed that the Albertsons Community Partners Program we at Thurston Elementary have benefited from has been discontinued. This is the program where you were able to direct a percentage of your Albertsons purchase to a specific school. Our PTA had registered most of your cards to make this happen.
In their letter they discuss how they have decided to discontinue the Community Partners Program and are now choosing to refocus their efforts on key needs in the community huger, health and nutrition.
This is a shame because we did count on this program. Last year from Sept 08'-June 09' we received $867.35 from Albertsons. This will leave a big gap in our annual PTA budget to fill.
Luckily SAFEWAY still offers the same type of program through their club card and we will continue to receive a percentage of your purchases there!! This school year we have collected $280 from the Safeway program.
Love & LogicNEW Parent Resources Shelf
Our PTA has purchased some Love and Logic materials that will be available in our library for parents to check-out for a week at a time. They are:
DVD - Who Says Parenting Can't Be Fun
Love & Logic Solutions
How to Discipline Kids w/out Losing Their Love & Respect
CD - Allowing Kids to Choose Success
Helicopters, Drill Sergeants and Consultants (Parenting Styles)
Winning the Homework Battle
Books - How to Discipline Kids w/out Losing Their Love & Respect
Meeting the Challenge (Attention and Behavior Skill)
When Kids Leave You Speechless
Parenting with Love and Logic
TES Papa's Pizza Night - UPDATE pizza
Thank you to everyone who joined us for both pizza nights. The first was a PTA fundraiser and we made a whopping $496.67!!!! Great turn out!
The next Pizza Night will be April 20th. Flyers to come home closer to the date.
gymnasticsGymnastics Night - Febraury 19th 5:30-7:30
PTA will be hosting our annual Gymnastics Night at NAAGS (National Academy of Artisic Gymnastics). As with all PTA sponsored events, it is FREE to PTA members and $4 per child to non members. You will have the opportunity to join at the event if you choose to. See you there!

Love and LogicParenting Help for Middle School
Pamela Lanning and Parenting with Love and Logic
There's no doubt parenting a middle school age child can be a very differnt experience. Pamela Lanning is scheduled to speak at TMS on February 18th at 7:00. She will explain how the Love and Logic techniques can smooth the transition to the teen years. There is sure to be very valuable information available for any parent and we look forward to seeing you.
If you are interested in attending Pam's presentation, please let Brandy Selby from TMS know so she will have enough materials available. blselby@comcast.net or 541-744-0707
Angela Wienhold Fundraiser
Angela Wienhold, the mother of Bianca Newell a fourth grader in Mr. Bonar's class, has Leukemia. She currently is in Seattle where she underwent a stem cell transplant. Bianca is here, staying with one of our wonderful TES families.
Angela is currently on a one-year leace of absence from her job as a teacher at Douglas Gardens. Angela and Bianca do not have any family to lean on in this time of need. It is our hope they can lean on all of us to help in any way we can.
A few weeks ago we had a district wide Papa's Pizza Night fundraiser that raised $684 for her medical fund. Because the cost of Angela's care when she returns in about four months so staggering, you may also donate to: "THE ANGELA WIENHOLD MEDICAL FUND" ACCOUNT #653 000 5286 Wells Fargo Bank. If you want to send a note to Angela or would like to help in other ways besides monetarily, you can contact Angie Roser at (541) 912-4437.
Thank you ahead of time for supporting one of our own.
