Who wants to be Charlie??Cheetah Mascot

At each H.E.A.R.T. Assembly we like to have our favorite cheetah make an appearance and give high-fives to all the kids winning awards.  To make sure we don't miss an assembly I would like to start a signup in advance.  This way all our kids get a chance to meet Charlie!  We do make sure to have the costume dry cleaned regularly.  It would be about an hour commitment.  Here are the dates we need to fill...

February 1st - 1:50

March 1st - 10:35

April 5th - 1:50

May 1st - 10:35

June 12th - 9:30 - End of the year assembly

This is actually a really fun activity to do.  You get to act silly anonymously and the kids absolutely LOVE IT!  Contact April atapriluffens@comcast.net ASAP to sign up PLEASE~

cheetah with adultsFamily Fun Night Planning Meeting

Please join us Tuesday, January 10th @ 6:00 in the library for the first FFN planning meeting.  I know it seems early to be planning, but this event is our biggest of the year and takes MANY volunteers and planning to be a success.

We will be answering any questions you might have as well as explaining the process for the event.  We will be looking for the following volunteers:

  • Classroom Raffle Basket Main Coordinator (1 volunteer)
  • Individual Classroom Basket Coordinators (2 per class.  Some classrooms like to team up with others which makes it much easier)
  • Community Donations Coordinator(s) (1-5 volunteers)
  • Food Coordinator(s) (1-3 volunteers)
  • Vendor Coordinator (1 volunteer)
  • Bingo Coordinator (1 volunteer)

There will be many volunteer opportunities the night of the event and the week leading up.  The above positions are more hands on and urgent to fill.  Each position already has a volunteer who has done it for years and is willing to be of any assistance in helping on every level.  Rest assured you will not be in this alone.

Please consider coming even if you are not sure if you want to commit to anything. This meeting is not intended to pressure anyone...just info.  Childcare WILL NOT provided.

Any questions can be directed to April Uffens at apriluffens@comcast.net

Don't Forget! Popcorn Friday January 6th & 20th

Popcorn is $.25 a bag, or any combination of 12 Box Tops, Campbell's labels, or NEW this year  My Coke Rewards Points! Just send them to school with your kiddos in a plastic bag with the number written on the bag and they will trade them in for popcorn tickets that they can use to purchase bags of popcorn.

Pouch CollectionCapri Sun
In the cafeteria at TES we collect juice pouches like, Capri Sun, Koolaid Coolers, and Honest Kids to name a few, and then one of our parents (Kate Tiernan) boxes them up to ship to TerraCycle.  At TerraCycle they get "upcycled" into new products like pencil pouches and bags.  TerraCycle also pays the PTA as much as $.02 per pouch.  We are reducing the waste and raising money for our school at the same time!

If anyone would like to purchase pencil pouches created from this collection they will soon be available for $5.  Please contact Kate Tiernan atkatemtiernan@gmail.com for more info.

Watch D.O.G.S.Watch D.O.G.S. Program

Dads, the new year brings a new chance to be a Watch D.O.G.S. Hero to your kids! This new program is a hit with students and with teachers! Contact Brenda Royce at brendaroyce@thurstonpta.com to set up your D.O.G.S. day or to find out more information.

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students.) This is a very imortant role. The goal is to have one dad (father figure) at the school one day each week.  They will wear a special t-shirt and spend the day at bus duty, morning assembly, classroom, reading, lunch, recess etc.  You will be interacting with students all day, not grading papers, copies etc. This program gives dads the chance to play a VERY IMPORTANT roll at school and interact with not only their own children, but be a mentor to others that might not have one.  Your kids will think you are amazing...I promise you that! The weeks will go by quickly so please contact me soon to sign up and find out how to become a Watch D.O.G.S. at Thurston Elementary School.

We are collecting hotel toiletries all year to donate to the Brattain House for homeless families.  There will be a bin on the table in front of the PTA Room.  Please feel free to collect and encourage your children to collect when on vacation.  Let them d/o and explain why.  Its a great way to give your children the power to help the needy in our own community.

gardenSchool Garden Project

The TES PTA is moving forward with plans to build a school garden in the courtyard area near the school commons.  This location was chosen by Jared Prutch, from the School Garden Project, along with the 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Dewey and PTA member Malea Jagels.  The School Garden Project will be providing information, training and guidance throughout this process as well as helping to present curriculum to 5th graders throughout the school year.  We are very excited about this project and will encourage teachers and students in all grades to visit and use the garden at anytime.

We are in need of volunteers to join the Garden Project Committee.  For details, contact Malea Jagels atimmkjagels@gmail.com

Free Money from Safeway!!
(We earned $1,132.11 the 2010-11 School Year!)

We are able to register your Safeway card and those of your neighbors, family and friends.  Send your name, address and card number to Britta Wyatt atbrittamwyatt@gmail.com.  You can also go to escrip.com, enter our school name and register your Safeway, Market of Choice, Macy's, Nordstrom, VISA, MC, AMEX, Discover and more!

If you don't know your card number (different than your phone number), you can call 1-877-723-3929 to get it.  They will only release that info to the card holder for privacy reasons.

Feel free to collect as many Safeway card numbers as you can from your friends and family too!

Meet your PTA Board Members

April Uffens - President

I am excited to be your president once again.  I have been a member of TES PTA for approximately 9 years with this being my 4th as your president.  I will continue to publish the online newsletter, run the Entertainment Book fundraiser and facilitate our monthly meetings.  My main responsibility is to lead our PTA towards specific goals chosen by our members.  My husband Eric and I have a son Carson (third grader) who loves playing TPWF and a daughter Elesha who will be a Junior at THS.   My goal this year is to create even more committees to accomplish greater goals and encourage more parent evolvement. I am pleased to work with a motivated board yet another year.  Allow me to introduce them to you.

Brenda Royce - Vice President

My roots are firmly planted in Thurston! Along with my two children, 4th grader Calvin and 1st grader Evelyn, I also went to this school as did my dad and my grandfather! My deep connection to this community grows stronger as my children get older. I work full-time at a medical office in the RiverBend Comlex. This year my husband, Michael, and I will be working hard on the new Watch D.O.G.S. program. I will be in charge of the Safeway Rewards program. I am creating a 'contact book' for the students/parents so we can all stay connected! I will be implementing a Welcoming Group of parents from each grade to help new families feel better informed when they join our school later in the year. This committee will also help the new kinder parents get a grasp on all the fun events, meetings, and fundraisers our PTA offers throughout the year. Join us at our PTA meetings to hear more!

Toni Webb - Vice President

Hello, name is Toni Webb, I have been involved in TES PTA for 6 years and this is my 3rd year as VP. Jade Neckels - Treasurer

My name is Jade Neckels and this will be my third year as Treasurer. My son, Devon, is in 3rd grade this year and my daughter, Skylar, is a Kinder. I am currently working towards my business degree while trying to start my own jewelry business, Birds of a Feather. In addition to my Treasurer duties, this year I will be managing the PTA website and organizing both the Holiday Bazaar and the See's Candy fundraiser. I'm excited to be once again a part of such a wonderful group of caring parents and educators!
